ANCHOR HANDLERS

Anchor Handlers (or Riggers) work on the back deck of large anchor handling vessels up to 100 miles offshore... and in all types of weather. This work is physically and mentally demanding, but rewarding, with excellent pay and career opportunities.

The Rigger is part of a 7–10 person crew (depending on the size of the job) that retrieves and sets anchors for drilling rigs and barges. Offshore riggers make connections between large wire cable, chain and anchors. The rigger takes direction from the Superintendent who ensures work procedures are completed in the safest and most efficient manner. Also part of the crew are a Winch Operator and a Welder.

Compensation - Rewarding

Anchor handlers are well compensated based upon experience and expertise. Additionally, Riggers earn significant safety pay and extra earnings by waiving time off. Advancement is based on available position, knowledge, dependability and leadership.

Qualifications

Candidates should have a high school degree (or equivalent), valid drivers license, and a stable work history and demonstrate mechanical aptitude and ability to use rigger tools and materials. Candidates must be available for 24-hour call to work, except for scheduled days off.

Candidates must be physically able to swim and perform strenuous work, including the ability to:

See and hear warnings of dangerous conditions
Read warning signs and communicate in English
Frequently climb ladders and stairs safely
Ride in aircraft or crane-lifted personnel carriers
Safely step over an 18" obstruction

Work Schedule/Working Conditions – Mentally and Physically Challenging

Riggers are on a On Call schedule. When called or paged, he must return the page within 30 minutes. Riggers are traditionally offshore 2/3 of the year and they must remain offshore until the job is finished—except in extreme emergencies. Time off is generally not paid time. Work assignments are based on rotation. Riggers work in all kinds of weather - night and day.
